Full Name: Christopher James Hill
Job Title: Displays and Maintenance manager
Age: 25
What does the role entail: I am responsible for all aspects of animal care and welfare, and also pushing and developing our displays on to an even brighter future. At the same time, I’m responsible for all conceivable aspects of maintenance on the site.
What excites you most about your new job: Creativity, the chance to make whatever I can think of come to life! Complete displays are living art.
What was your previous role: I worked previously at the Oceanarium in Bournemouth, firstly as a welcome host, and then an aquarist. I’ve also done a random range of jobs in the past; I’ve been a waiter, painter and builder, bookseller, worked in IT and had a go at photography!
How do you feel about moving to Cumbria: Cumbria is a beautiful place to live, so I’m very happy. I will be investing in a mountain board for summer, snow board for winter, and a kayak for the lakes.
With what type of creature do you most enjoy working with and why: I enjoy working with the marmosets; they are very intelligent and curious. As I’m new, they are stand-offish, but I’m sure we will get on well in the future. Aside from them, I’m interested in all kinds of animals, at the Oceanarium my speciality was invertebrates (any critters without a spine), and marine animals (Those in the sea).
Which is your favourite aquarium/zoo in the world: The most impressive aquarium in the world is probably either Monterey bay in America, or Okinawa Churaumi in Japan. Some of their tanks are just mind –bogglingly huge. I’d recommend you look up some photos online. As for zoos, check out Blackpool zoo, who’ve had baby otters and a gorilla born this year!

If you love Harry Potter, you will know all about the mystical creatures appearing in the books and films – including unicorns and dragons! But did you know there’s one mystical creature that actually exists? You don’t even have to be at Hogwarts to see it, as it lives at Lakes Aquarium and we’ve more than ever, with new arrivals from Chester Zoo!
Many children arrive at Lakeside not realising that the seahorse is a living creature. They become absolutely fascinated by it, partly because it’s like a tiny swimming horse and also because it swims upright, rather than horizontally.
Its long curved tail is quite odd in proportion to its overall size, as is the snout through which it sucks up its food.
But this isn’t all! It is also the only creature in the world that has the male bearing and giving birth to the young. The male seahorse becomes pregnant when the female deposits eggs in its pouch and then fertilizes the eggs, carries the babies until they hatch and releases them into the sea.
Unfortunately, because of its mystical nature, some cultures catch the seahorse, believing they can make powerful medicine e from it. Sea pollution is also destroying the sea grasses in which seahorses live. The seahorse could become extinct, unless we protect it.
You can help. If you go on holiday and see items made from seahorses, do not buy them! Next, encourage your parents to use natural cleaning products, free of the harsh chemicals that damage marine life. Then, tell everyone how wonderful the seahorse is and ask them to tell others.
I have just had great fun with the Annual Pass Kids Club. We did pumpkin carving followed by meeting and holding owls, snakes, bats and giant snails!
Check out these fabulous pumpkins!!
