Daily Talks
Our knowledgeable talks team will be on hand throughout your visit. In addition we offer a programme of daily talks as follows:
Otter Talks
Our cute Asian otters, Mia and Smudge, have long been favourites with our visitors. Many of you return to Lakeside again and again to see them playing, rolling around in pretend fights and popping in and out of their holt.
As the Aquarium now incorporates lakes of the world, Mia and Smudge now have a new pad, or you could say, as they will be housed in an area resembling the Asian wetlands and paddy field environments. Great news for all our otter fans is that two of our daily otter talks will now include a feeding demonstration. Otter feeding will be at 10.30 am and 3.00pm each day. The 12 noon talk will still take place, but without the feeding as we must not over feed them! Otters are carnivorous and Asian small-clawed otters feed on fish, crabs, frogs, shellfish and crayfish, when in the wild. With claws more retracted than those of other otters, they manipulate food in an almost human manner. These otters live in mangrove swamps and freshwater wetlands in countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, India, China, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines, where habitats are being lost because of environmental issues.
Pollution and hunting are also putting this type of otter under threat. If you come to one of our events, you might also catch up with Oscar, our new otter mascot - every bit as playful and loveable as our real otters.

Conservation
We will be constantly updating our information point in the seashore discovery zone. We have recently set up a partnership with the South Cumbria Rivers Trust http://www.scrt.co.uk and we will be focusing heavily on educating local children on wildlife and their environment.
